George Russell Thomas, Jr.

George Russell Thomas Jr, 74, of Louisville Kentucky, passed away on August 27, 2026.

George Russell Thomas Jr was born in Louisville, Kentucky to George R. “Sonny” Thomas Sr and Doris Jean Thomas on January 18, 1952.

He attended high school at Theodore Ahrens Trade High School, and attended Jefferson Community and Technical College where he earned his associates degree. He met and proposed to the love of his life Evelyn. Together they created a beautiful life raising Sha’Tasha (Cornell) Ward Jr and Lee Nesbitt Jr (LJ). His greatest joy was being the best Paw Paw to the twins Luke and Logan and Cash who he affectionately nicknamed Bob.

He was a dedicated worker of Phillip Morris retiring at the age of 47 to enjoy life. Russell played Golf, traveled and enjoyed jazz concerts all over. Prior to Phillip Morris, Russell was enlisted as a Sergeant in the United States Army- Military Police, stationed at San Antiono Texas. He was honorably discharged August 20th 1978.

He was a devoted member of Cable Missionary Baptist Church. He loved to speak about the goodness of the Lord and all that God has done for him. Russell loved the Lord fiercely and we have no doubt he is resting in the Saviors arms. A huge U of L fan of both football and basketball, he couldn’t wait for the season to start so he could enjoy the games with his son and grandson. His proudest moments were in the stands cheering for his grandsons. Russell took on the duty of helping to raising the boys. Each morning Paw Paw fixed breakfast, dressed the boys, and took them to school. Creating games to entertain them; counting trees, buses, and of course the peppermint challenge. They had a close bond. If you knew Russell you are familiar with the phrases Jenny, Dear, Gus, and Hoss. He will be missed.

Russell is preceded in death by his mother, Doris Jean Thomas; father, George R. "Sonny" Thomas Sr.; and his sister, Vickie Thomas.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn M. Nesbitt; daughter, Sha'Tasha Ward (Cornell); son, Lee Nesbitt Jr.; sisters, Glenda Thomas and Tonie Johnson; brother, Andre Thomas; grandsons, Luke Ward, Logan Ward, and Cash Ward; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be Saturday, September 5, 2026 at Cable Missionary Baptist Church, 1875 Farnsley Road, Louisville, KY, from 9am-11am with a celebration of George's life beginning at 11am.

Russell will be laid to rest at Green Meadows Cemetery, 3800 Shanks Lane, Louisville, KY with graveside services beginning at 1:15pm.
