George I. Smith

George I. Smith, 87, of Memphis, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2021. George was a long-time member of St. John Paul II Catholic Church (St. Joseph Hill Campus) in Sellersburg. He retired from maintenance at Sears, Roebuck & Co. in Clarksville, Indiana. George could build or fix anything and enjoyed working in his building or garden and talking to neighbors who came to visit. He loved life and was happiest when surrounded by his friends and family. He will be remembered by his beautiful smile and willingness to help anyone.

He was born in Clark County, Indiana, to Louis V. and Mary Bernadine (Koetter) Smith. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, JoAnn Smith; brothers, Callistus, Julius, Robert, Hugh, Louis "Bud", and Norman Smith; sisters, Marcella Miller, Edith Ems, Regina Jacobi, and Rita Austin.

George is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Wilma Caroline (Hollkamp) Smith; daughters, June (Michael) Kruer and Jane Smith-Lamb; son, Jude (Morena) Smith; sister, Mary (Francis) Geswein; grandchildren, Michelle (Doug) McCrocklin, John Kruer, JoAnn (Jeromy) Rex, and Jackie Smith; and great-grandchildren, Noah, Jacob, Hudson, Cade, Eli, and Mason.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 6, and after 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - New Albany (3309 Ballard Lane). His Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 7, at St. John Paul II (St. Joseph Hill Campus) with burial to follow at St. Joseph Hill Catholic Cemetery in Sellersburg, Indiana.

The family requests that contributions in George's memory be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
