Gary Murphy, a beloved member of the New Albany community, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2026, surrounded by his cherished wife, Ruth Jeanne Murphy, and his loving family. Born on August 1, 1945, in New Albany, Gary lived a life infused with hard work, devotion, and a profound love for the great outdoors.

Gary dedicated over 40 years of his life to Day Lumber Company and Boland Maloney Lumber, where he excelled as an outside salesman. His commitment to his career was matched only by his strong sense of honesty and integrity, values that he instilled in those around him. A proud graduate of New Albany High School, he also served his country as a member of the Indiana National Guard during the Vietnam Era, demonstrating his steadfast dedication to both family and nation.

His adventurous spirit shone through in his hobbies; whether he was camping, fishing, boating, or woodworking, Gary always found joy and solace in nature. More importantly, he treasured the moments spent with family, delighting in backyard barbecues where he showcased his grilling talents, fostering gatherings filled with laughter and love.

He was a devoted husband, nurturing father, and a proud grandfather, leaving behind a legacy of love that will forever be cherished by his surviving family: his wife, Ruth Jeanne; his sons, Gary (Michelle) Murphy and Thomas (Jeanette) Murphy; and his grandchildren, Gary, Thomas, Benjamin, and Emily. Gary’s proudest accomplishment was witnessing his family grow and thrive, a testament to the values he embedded in each of them.

Gary is preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Tate, and father, Earl Murphy. Their influences shaped the man he became, and he carried their memory into every relationship he nurtured.
