Gary L. Kelton

Gary L. Kelton, born April 26, 1948, in Carbondale, Illinois, passed away on August 1, 2026. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose love and dedication touched many lives.

Gary led a life defined by service and commitment. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, rising through the ranks until his retirement. He continued his devotion to public service as a member of the Kentucky National Guard, also retiring with distinction, and later, he worked for the Veterans Administration, providing care and support to his fellow veterans. Gary’s career was marked by his deep respect for military history and his passion for uplifting those who served alongside him. His exemplary professionalism and leadership were further enriched by his successful completion of the Air Force Senior NCO Academy.

Beyond his professional and military achievements, Gary nurtured a rich and fulfilling personal life. He was an avid guitar player, bringing music into family gatherings and quiet evenings alike. His creativity extended to painting, where he expressed himself through art, capturing moments and memories. Gary held a lifelong enthusiasm for military history, and his knowledge fueled conversations and friendships throughout his years.

Gary’s presence will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Irene Kelton, who stood by him through all seasons of life. He is survived by his loving daughter, Carrie Smith and her husband Gregory, as well as his devoted son, Charlie Kelton and his wife Tara, and his grandson Landry Kelton and his wife Mallory. He leaves behind his sister, Dixie Clemons and her husband Tom, along with his niece Caitlin Bias (Patrick), and his nephew Kellen Clemons.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Bonnie Kelton, and his two brothers, Carl Wayne Kelton and Jerry Lee Kelton. Their memories remained close to his heart.

A respectful and fitting tribute to Gary’s life and service will be held as he is laid to rest at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central. The date and time of the interment are to be determined.

Gary L. Kelton will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to family, his distinguished service, his artistic spirit, and the kindness he offered all who knew him. His legacy lives on in those who loved him and in the example he set as a patriot, artist, and family man.
