Gary Ray Compton, a devoted husband, father, and respected Nationwide Insurance Agent, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, at the VA Hospital. Born on January 11, 1946, in Louisville, Kentucky, Gary lived a life marked by unwavering faith, dedication to family, and exemplary service to his community and country.
Gary’s story is one of steadfast commitment and extraordinary character. He was a man who never met a stranger and never left an enemy, embodying unconditional kindness and absolute genuineness. Known for his profound knowledge and unwavering work ethic second to none, he was a natural leader who always had a solution to any problem that came his way. His loyalty and devotion to his loved ones were unparalleled, and he mastered the art of being both a husband and a father—achievements he held closest to his heart.
Educated at PRP High School and a Life Underwriting Training Council Fellow, Gary’s professional career was distinguished by his role as a Nationwide Insurance Agent, where he brought guidance and reassurance to many. Beyond his professional life, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy for six years and was a respected member of the Flying Rifles and the Lions Club, further illustrating his commitment to service and community.
Gary’s personality shone through in simple yet meaningful ways—he would always end phone calls by saying, “I love you,” a small reminder of the deep love he held for those around him. Known for never letting anyone leave hungry, he was famous for his hospitality and cooking, especially his beloved gravy and biscuits. His passions extended to riding his tractor and working on his land, putting puzzles together, bowling, fishing, collecting antiques, aviation, and above all, helping others in dire need.
He is survived by his cherished wife of 50 years, Connie Compton; his sons, Chadwick Compton, with his fiancé Kelly Martin, Jason Compton and his wife Kristina; and his daughter Jenna Compton. Gary’s legacy extends proudly through his grandchildren—Brandon Compton and his wife Makenzie, Allyssa Compton, Preston Compton, Hunter Compton, and Liam Compton—as well as Jackson Clevenger, and his great-grandchildren Silas and Carter Compton. He also leaves behind an extended host of family and friends who will forever remember his warmth and leadership.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Blanche Compton, and his older brothers, Danny Compton and Louis Compton. Their memories live on in his heart and those who knew him.
