Essie Mae Merbs, born February 28, 1955, passed away on October 27, 2026.
Essie will be remembered as a woman with a generous heart and a spirit as free and bright as a wildflower. She was family oriented, deeply loving, and known as an animal lover whose care extended widely to those around her. A Baptist, she talked to the Lord every day, and her faith was a steady and meaningful part of her life. She also devoted herself to ministry that helped the homeless, offering compassion and care where it was needed most.
She found joy in life’s simple and happy moments. Essie enjoyed bingo, shopping, playing online games, and crocheting. She was also especially devoted to her lifelong partner, Denny Blazer, a bond that stood as one of the proudest and most meaningful parts of her life.
Essie was preceded in death by her mother, Viola Willock; her father, Ray Willock; her brothers, Roy Willock, Roger Willock, Ronnie Willock, and Ralph Willock; her sisters, Sue Webb, Pat Loveland, Betty Thompson, and Shirley Wilder; and her lifelong partner, Denny Blazer.
She leaves behind a family who will carry her memory forward with love: her sisters, Mary Hightower, Collen Willock. Peggy Shelton, Tina Ritter; her brothers, Raymond Willock and Robert Willock, along with an abundance of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In their hearts, Essie’s kindness, faith, and devotion to family will remain a lasting gift.
Visitation will be held on November 5, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Louisville, 10304 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, Kentucky 40272.
