Ella "Jean" Dougherty

Ella “Jean” Dougherty, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away on August 27, 2026, in New Albany at the age of 100. She was born on July 14, 1926, in Carroll County, Kentucky, and her long life was marked by faith, warmth, and a deep love for people.

Jean was a graduate of Carrollton High School and went on to work for more than 25 years as a secretary with Fort Worth Public Schools. She was known as an outgoing person who never met a stranger, and she continued making friends everywhere she went. She loved playing the piano, cherished church hymns, and delighted in being around people, whether they were lifelong friends or someone she had just met.

Her faith was a guiding presence throughout her life. Jean was proud to talk with anyone about Jesus and was a devoted member of Return Church in Clarksville, Indiana. Her family was the light of her life, and she took great pride in them. The memories, stories, and love she shared with them will continue on for years to come.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Susan (Don) Booth; her son, Steve Dougherty; her grandchild, Rob Kimbrough; great grandchildren, Sydnie, Nick, Cameron, Jack, and Grayson. She is also survived by great-great grandchildren Symon, Dekyn, and Izzy; and by her sisters, Edith Ford and Mazie Rosenbarger; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many-many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Dougherty; grandchild, Juli Hardy; her parents, Mose and Josephine Jenkins; her sisters, Kathy Graham, Joan Daleure, and Rachel Scott; and her brother, John Jenkins.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southern Indiana, 3309 Ballard Ln, New Albany, IN 47150. A funeral service will begin there at 1:00 p.m. with a private burial at IOOF Cemetery in Carrollton, Kentucky.

Jean’s life was a blessing to those who knew her. She will be remembered for her joyful spirit, her steadfast faith, her welcoming heart, and the love she gave so freely to her family and friends.
