Edward John Merkley, 80, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2021. At the age of 15, Ed began a successful career in woodworking that included employment at Corwell Company and Haas Cabinet Company. Ed eventually went on to become the owner of Merkley's Fine Wood Finishing in New Albany, where his hobby turned into a form of art.
Ed enjoyed spending winters in Florida where he soaked up the sunshine and enjoyed deep sea fishing. He was a devoted Christian and loved his family deeply. Each of Ed's grandchildren were considered his "favorite." He loved listening to their stories, learning about their lives and teaching them his passions, restoration and fishing.
He was born on December 21, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois to Edward and Vada (Watson) Merkley. In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his son, Ted Merkley.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of almost 62 years, Norma (Grigsby) Merkley; daughters, Wynema "Nemie" Paden, Velvet Roberson (Brian); daughter-in-law, Shelley Merkley; grandchildren, Garrett, Jordan, Taylor Paden, Brandon Roberson, Ambry Eberhardt (John), Landon, Olivia Merkley; great-grandchildren, Presley and Lyla Paden; and sisters, Betty Whitt and Alice Bledsoe (Eddie).
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 10, 2021 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) with his funeral service taking place at 2:00 p.m.
