Edward "Randel" Matheis, aged 98, of Louisville, Kentucky, peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2025. Randel’s life was a testament to love, family, and community, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Born on June 16, 1927, in Louisville, Randel was the cherished son of Ed and Lula Matheis. He grew up in Highland Park, where he attended St. Leo Catholic Church and Grade School, laying the foundation for a life rooted in faith and values. Following his graduation from Dupont Manual High School in 1945, Randel joined the United States Navy for 2 years. He remained a devoted Catholic, participating in the St. John Vianney Catholic Church, where his spirit and faith shone brightly.
Randel was not only a loving father and grandfather but a steadfast brother and friend. He enjoyed simple pleasures that brought joy to his heart—being an ardent Yankees fan, placing bets at Churchill Downs, and savoring meals at Cracker Barrel. These moments defined his character, illustrating his zest for life and connection to his interests.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, remembered fondly by his sons: James (Vickie), William (Theresa), Donnie, and Michael (Debbie), and daughter Carol (Todd) Thompson. His memory is cherished by his brother Albert (Ann) Matheis and his beloved grandchildren: Brian, Chad, Keith, Jamie, Cheri, Danny, Melissa, Traci, Alysia, Justin, Michael, and Rachael. Randel also embraced the joy of family through thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Randel is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Ed and Lula Matheis, his son David Matheis, and his sister Delores Bynum. As we gather to honor his memory, we find comfort in the love he has shared and the memories he has created with us.
