Eduard Gfeller
Eduard Gfeller died on March 18th, 2022 in New Albany, Indiana. He was 84 years old. He was born in Aarburg, Switzerland in 1937, the older son of Eduard and Anna Georgette Gfeller. He grew up in Lucerne, Switzerland and graduated from the University of Bern School of Medicine. He received his psychiatric training at the Sheppard Pratt Hospital in Baltimore, MD and went on to work as Chief of Psychiatry at Veterans Administration hospitals in Birmingham, AL, and in Gainesville, FL and Tampa, FL. He was in private practice in Winter Park, FL from 1987 to 1993 when he joined Orlando Regional Medical Center as Medical Director for Behavioral Health. In 2002, he returned to the VA at the Orlando outpatient clinic. He retired after several years with the Florida Clinical Research Center.
While he put a lot of energy into his work life, he equally loved hobbies outside of it and sharing those with his family. For years he raced sailboats all around the Gulf and East coasts of Florida, trying to balance the need for an ultralight racing boat with one that would have the comforts necessary for slower-paced pleasure cruises. Many weekends and weeks were spent out on the water with family and friends, and those remained some of his fondest memories.
As he moved closer to retirement and sailing was no longer practical, he whole-heartedly pursued his love of filmmaking. He learned camerawork and lighting, took online classes in editing, and filmed dozens of interviews, completing and distributing documentaries on local history in Winter Park, including a retrospective of the demolished Langford Resort Hotel and a profile of Edwin Grover, a Rollins College professor about whom he also wrote a book. He was tireless in what was often tedious work, loved researching and talking with interview subjects and always had a project or a new idea to pursue.
His blended family includes his wife of 39 years, Joan Gfeller (née Fortwengler) of Jeffersonville, IN, daughters Anne Higuera (Clarence) of Vashon, WA and Katherine Gfeller of Pasadena, CA, Jill Dorozynski (Thomas) of Gainesville, FL, and John Conely (Nydia) of Tampa, FL. He is also survived by grandchildren Jackson, Logan and Delila Higuera and Nicholas Conely. He is predeceased by his brother Walter (Marguerite) Gfeller and parents.
A celebration of life will be held by his immediate family later this year.
