Listen to Obituary

Edith C. Jesernig, 98, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 8, 2026.

She was born on June 12, 1927 in Buffalo, New York to the late David and Edith (Berg) Mowatt. She is preceded in death by her husband, William Jesernig, siblings, David B. Mowatt, Charles P. Mowatt (Marian), John Mowatt (Dorene), son-in-law, William (Chuck) Chambers and brother-in-law, Hugh Burritt.

Edith was a graduate of Kenmore High School, attended Buffalo State University and earned her Associates Degree from Harper College. An avid bridge player, skier, and swimmer, she was also an excellent seamstress and enjoyed reading, knitting and cooking. Her vocation varied over the years from preschool teacher to paralegal to licensed realtor and property manager. Her lifelong calling was to her family. Married for 38 years to Bill, they traveled the country for his career with their 4 girls in tow. Homes in Indiana, Michigan, Maryland, Kentucky, Illinois, New York and Washington were hubs of activity, where extra places at the table for friends at dinner were customary. Edie leaves a legacy of love, fun, laughter and a “can do” attitude that allowed her to live fully to her last day. In case you're wondering, she will tell you that the secret to a long life is exercise, which she did til her last day as well!

Edith is survived by her loving daughters, Sandy Compton (Doug), Margot Chambers, Tracy Fournier (Jeanne), Tammy Hartmann (Jeff); two grandchildren, Brandy Lloyd & Ross Chambers; great-grandchildren, AJ, Mykailah, Lucas and Ayla, as well as her beloved sister, Grace Burritt, and Andy Genton who she considered part of the family. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends also survive.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Arcadia Senior Living community in Louisville, as well as the onsite EmpowerMe therapy team for all the love and care they provided to “Miss Edie” the last 4 years. Staff and neighbors alike were her second family and hold a special place in our hearts. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Jennifer Walden-Fain for years of excellent care, Dr. Paul McKee for doing everything possible to keep mom mobile - and Linda Higgins for being mom's helper, dear friend ...and partner in mischief! We are so very thankful for everyone who helped mom age with a twinkle in her eye and a few shenanigans up her sleeve. As she said on the day before she went home to be with the Lord: “I feel GREAT!”. That is everything we could ever ask for.

Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until the time of the memorial service at 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, KY 40243).
