Dr. Earl McLain Owen, Jr. passed peacefully in his sleep on September 27, 2025. Known to many as Dr. Earl, he had a gift for warmth and humor, which was his calling card. He used it generously, whether with friends, family, or strangers who didn’t stay strangers for long.
Music was also an important thread that ran through his life. After earning his doctorate at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, he went on to teach voice at New Orleans Baptist Seminary, guiding countless students as they found not just their voices, but their confidence. He also served as a choral director and music leader across the South, always blending his love of song with his gift for lifting others up.
What mattered most, though, was family. Earl is survived by his daughters, Stacy Owen and Rachel (Andrea Hewitt) Owen, and his granddaughter, Emily Trask, who brought him endless joy. He also leaves behind his beloved “baby” sister, Linda (Mike) Bachman, nephew Mark (Sol) Bachman, niece Christine (Tim) Ingram, and their children.
He also treasured his community at Gold’s Gym in Winter Haven, Florida, and the staff and caregivers at Treyton Oak Towers in Louisville, KY. The family extends special thanks to the 4th floor nurses and aids who gave Dr. Earl such outstanding care in his final years.
Dr. Earl had a few favorite rituals that summed him up perfectly: Sunday afternoon pup-cup drives with his grand-dog Rudy, cheering on his Tampa Bay Buccaneers, insisting that ice cream belonged at the end of every meal, flirting with the ladies, and filling his days with the classical music he loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl McLain Owen Sr. and Thelma Lee (Webb) Owen.
Dr. Earl Owen will be remembered not only for his exceptionally good looks, but for the laughter, love, and wisdom he left with everyone fortunate enough to know him. His legacy continues—in every story told, every smile sparked, and every note of music that carries on.
Earl’s wish was to be cremated. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at a later date. To honor his memory, contributions may be sent via Venmo @Stacy-Owen-82. All donations will be forwarded to the Treyton Oak Towers Staff Christmas Fund in Earl’s name.
