Dr. William Boies Worthington (Bill), 95, of Louisville, Kentucky passed peacefully from this life on March 19, 2022 with Sherlon Worthington by his side.
Born on November 29, 1926, Bill was the middle child of James A. and Edna S. Worthington. Along with his older brother, Jim and younger sister, Clara Ruth, he grew up in Sheffield, Alabama in "The Village". His father was a chief engineer for the TVA and his Uncle Frank was President of Southern Railroad. His mother was a homemaker whose family hailed from Knoxville, Tennessee.
Bill graduated from Sheffield High School in 1943. In October of 1944, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, where he trained as a Navigator Bombardier on the Martin B27 and was awarded the Victory Medal and the American Theatre Medal. In 1946, he reenlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he received a full scholarship to the University of Louisville School of Dentistry.
While in dental school, he met and married Carol Hutchison, a nursing student. Together they had two children, Staci and Brad. The young couple was involved in the Louisville Dental Society on many levels. Carol was very active in the Dental Auxiliary prior to her untimely passing in 1974.
After graduation, Carol and Bill moved to McDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida where Bill was stationed and fulfilled his military obligations. He continued to serve his country as a member of the Air Force Reserve until August of 1972.
Bill practiced dentistry in Louisville from 1955 to 2011, with offices in the Heyburn Building, Dutchman's Lane, and in Prospect, Kentucky. First and foremost in Bill's life was his love of dentistry. He was dedicated to his patients and his practice.
In 2004, he was presented with a Fifty Year Award for his memberships in the American Dental Association, Kentucky Dental Association and the Louisville Dental Society. He served as president of the Louisville Dental Society in 1986 and became a Life Member in 1998. He was a clinical instructor at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in the Department of Advanced Restorative Dentistry, a Life Member in the American Equilibration Society, and a past member of the American Prosthodontics Society. He was a Fellow of the International College of Dentistry since 1962, where he served as a Deputy Regent for Kentucky, an honor bestowed by invitation only. He was appointed and served as a member of the Kentucky State Board of Dental Examiners for eight years, serving as both president and vice-president, and was a member of the Southern Regional Testing Association. He was an innovator, the inventor of the patented Worthington Advanced Miniature Implant System.
Bill was a former member of Harvey Browne Presbyterian Church, Big Spring Country Club, the Merit Board of the Boy Scouts of America, and District Commissioner of The United States Pony Club. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the Royal Order of Jesters and he played trombone in the Shriners Band. He was an honorary member of the Westport High School "W" Club spending many Friday nights videotaping football games. Bill was a passionate golfer and an avid recreational pilot, in both single and twin-engine planes. He loved to cook, brew beer and make wine. He was a beekeeper and an angler. He was an unwavering Louisville Cardinal fan.
Bill enjoyed all social settings, playing in bridge club, poker club, bowling leagues, golf tournaments ... any excuse to congregate with friends. Bill was a serial volunteer offering his time to numerous activities and projects. Wickedly smart, he was a master of joke telling, and retelling. He was the life of the party and he loved to dance, to which his willing and unwilling partners will attest. He will be remembered for always doing the best he could do, whenever he could. He was well known for his generous spirit.
Bill is preceded in death by his wife of twenty-two years, Carol, parents Edna and Jim Worthington, sister Clara Ruth Adams and her husband Les Adams. Bill is survived by his brother James A. Worthington, his daughter Staci Worthington Hancock (Arthur), his son W. Bradley Worthington (Teri), his second wife Sherlon Raleigh Worthington and step son Philip Ammon (Lisa), ten grandchildren: Waddell Walker Hancock, Carolyne Hutchison Hancock Kruger (Ben), Katherine Clay Hancock, Elizabeth Alexander Hancock Knelman (Jak), Arthur B. Hancock IV (Jessie), Lynn Worthington Hancock, Brooke Hutchison Worthington, Ann Kaitlyn Worthington, William Bradley Worthington, Christopher Hampton Worthington, three great grandchildren: Simon Kruger, Alastair Kruger, Elizabeth Knelman, and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home 235 Juneau Drive Louisville, KY 40243, to include a brief visitation at 5:30 pm and services at 6:00 pm on Saturday, March 26, 2022. His entombment will be private at Resthaven.
