Dr. Steven Michael Florence, DMD, Diplomate of OMFS Colonel, U S Army (Retired), passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

Steve is the son of the late Frank and Dodie Florence, born February 21, 1959 in Louisville, KY.  Nothing in Steve’s life has been more important than his two sons. Along with that family priority, he has had an extraordinary life of service and dedication. Like his father and brothers, he was a nearly 10-year Firefighter/Officer with the St. Matthews Fire District. Following his graduation from Central High School; graduation from the University of Louisville with B.S. and then his (DMD) Doctorate in Dental Medicine--He pursued his lifelong dream of being a Soldier.

While in Dental School he was commissioned into the KY Army National Guard. Upon Dental graduation, he commissioned into the Active component/ US Army and selected for his first (of many) honors; the 1-year AEPGD at Ft. Sill, OK. Shortly after returning from his first assignment, He was selected to participate in several Special Skills schools, culminating in successfully completing training as a Special Forces Soldier; a life-long goal. Dental Advanced Specialty training was then awarded. He completed training at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, as Steve became a Diplomate of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Steve proudly served all over the world in the Army over his 23 years of total service. Just before he chose to retire, he was selected to be promoted to the rank of Colonel.

Steve decided, shortly after his Army Retirement, to return to his hometown, Louisville, with his family, to be with family and lifelong friends. He had a “good run” for a few years as a private practice Oral Surgeon, here in Louisville…but his heart forever remained “with the Army.” He retired fully in 2021.

In addition to his parents, Steve is preceded in death by his sister, Sharon.

Left to cherish Steve's memory are his sons, Xander and Kai Florence; along with his siblings, Brent and Teresa Florence; Lisa F. Bloom and Mike Bloom and Ran and Susan Florence. Included in Steve’s survivors are his many Army and SF Battle Buddies, who have been extraordinary in their friendship, brotherhood and devotion.

Steve’s family wishes to “THANK with all our hearts” the truly amazing Robley Rex VA Medical Center Staff, particularly the VA Palliative Care/ Hospice Team, ICU Team and ALL the “5 North Angels,” who have shown Steve unequalled levels of dedication, professionalism and care, in his final weeks. Throughout Steve’s last months, these Heroes never failed in making sure he was respected and cared for.

Steve’s family will arrange a Memorial and Celebration of Life in the future.
