Roger Smith "Doc" Boone, DVM, 89, of Sellersburg, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 26, 2025. Born on October 1, 1935, in Hammond, Indiana, he was the son of Laurence and Ethel (Smith) Boone. Roger's early years were spent on the family farm in Laconia, Indiana, where the hard work and dedication he learned while tending to the land and cattle inspired a lifelong commitment to the well-being of animals.
After graduating from Iowa State University, Roger embarked on a fulfilling career in veterinary medicine, opening Ridgeview Animal Clinic in 1965. He dedicated his professional life to caring for animals, which was exemplified by his important role in supporting the New Albany Police Department's K-9 Unit. His expertise and compassionate approach earned him respect and admiration from pets and their owners alike until his retirement in 2000. A proud member of both the American and Indiana Veterinary Medical Associations, he was deeply passionate about his work.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Roger served in the United States Army, was an avid outdoorsman and historian, with a particular passion for the Civil War, the American West, and the history of his beloved state of Indiana. His love for history sparked many enjoyable conversations and connections with others who shared his interests.
Roger found joy in traveling the world alongside his wife, Lynne, with whom he shared a partnership lasting nearly six decades. As an active parishioner at Grace Lutheran Church, his faith and love for the Lord provided him with strength and purpose throughout his life.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lynne; daughter, Nancy Edwards; and sisters, Marilyn Cressy and Janet Boone. Roger will be lovingly remembered by his children, Joyce Karrfalt (Eric) and David Boone (Cameron); grandsons, Nathan and Nicholas; as well as many extended family members and good friends.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Grace Lutheran Church, located at 1787 Klerner Lane, New Albany. A funeral service will commence at 12:00 p.m., followed by his interment at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Corydon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or the Floyd County Animal Rescue League.
