Dr. John Alvin Hamm, 87, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2021.
He was born on June 4, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Harold and Estelle (Messenie) Hamm. He is also preceded in death by his brothers William and Donald.
John graduated with the class of 1953 from Tilden Technical High School in Chicago, Illinois. He joined the U.S. Army in 1953 and served until 1956, teaching missile electronics. He then attended the University of Illinois at Urbana for undergrad and its College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1962.
John started his career at Christiansen Animal Hospital in 1962. John and Kathleen founded Green Bay Animal Hospital in Wilmette, Illinois in 1965. He was a member of the Wilmette Rotary Club and the Board of Trustees for the North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka, Illinois. He and Kathleen sold their veterinary practice in 1990 and retired after 25 years. They moved to the mountains in Franklin, North Carolina where they continued to focus on their animals, gardening, and working to establish their property as a Charter Member of the Stewardship Forest. John continued his volunteer services by serving on the Macon County Board of Health.
John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Dr. Kathleen Mary (Murphy) Hamm, son, John Patrick Hamm (Stephanie), two grandchildren, Cathryn and Mike Hamm, sister Cathy Tjepkema (Jim), and sister-in-law Patricia Murphy.
A private graveside service for family and friends will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, June 25, 2021 at Cave Hill Cemetery (701 Baxter Avenue Louisville, KY 40204).
The family requests that contributions in John's memory be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
