Donna Marie Bussmann (née Gittings), a loving mother, devoted grandmother, and steadfast spirit, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 16th, 2025, in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, at the age of 70, following a battle with cancer for several years. Born on June 28th, 1955, in Louisville, Donna was a lifelong resident of the city she loved. She grew up with a sense of adventure and independence, often running around the family business, Gittings Bedding Company, on Market Street. She received her education at St. Leonard’s School, attended Presentation Academy, and graduated from Atherton High School. On July 29th, 1974, Donna married her high school sweetheart, the late Heinz Bussmann. Together, they built a life centered around family and community. Donna had a sharp mind for business and spent much of her career as a dedicated bookkeeper for Riverside Paving Co. and The Rogers Group at Jefferson County Stone. Donna possessed an adventurous spirit and a deep love for the outdoors. She enjoyed traveling, hosting friends and family for barbecues, and camping. She found tranquility in gardening and prioritized being surrounded by those she loved. Above all, Donna will be remembered as a loving and caring mother who was tough and tenacious—a strength she demonstrated throughout her life and especially during her courageous battle with illness.
Donna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Heinz Bussmann; her brother, Mitch Gittings; and her parents, Patricia and William "Bernie" Gittings.
Donna is survived by her devoted children, Erik Bussmann and Cherie Bussmann (Matthew); her sister, Josephine Schabel; her brother, Patrick Gittings; and her greatest joys, her five grandchildren: Ethan Konrad Bussmann, Avery-Grace Nikole Bussmann, Kaylee Lynn Middleton, Madison Rose Middleton, and Ruby Marie Middleton. Her memory will be cherished by her family and many friends.
A gathering to celebrate Donna's life will be from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday, November 29, 2025 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, East Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, KY 40243.
