Donald Wayne Schanding was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He passed away peacefully at home at age 87 on February 13, 2026. He was born in Harrison County on April 14, 1938, to the late William Thomas and Zelphia Mae (Morrison) Schanding.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Paula; and nine brothers, E.T., Clarence, Raymond, Paul, Gene, Lewis, Leroy, Joe, and George Schanding; and two sisters, Betty Howard and Ann Chapman. He is survived by his sister Judy Blethen.
He received a nursing degree from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Covington, Kentucky, where he met his wife, Paula Werbrich. He became a father to Don, Amy (Scott), Greg, Brian (Loren), David (Lisa), and Jeff; grandfather to Megan, Nico, Katherine, Emily, Anna, Lela, Olivia, Henry, Jonah, Caroline, Kate, Isabella, and Madelynn; and great-grandfather to Harry.
In addition to the degree from St. Elizabeth, he also earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati in 1966 and a Master of Science in Nursing from Cincinnati in 1970. Don served in both the US Air Force and the US Army and retired from the Army in 1984.
Don was a lifelong fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats and loved listening and watching both football and basketball games. But he was at his happiest when surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
A committal service for the family will take place on at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, located at 2501 N Dixie Blvd, Radcliff, KY 40160.
