Donald Earl Shumaker

July 12, 1924 — March 10, 2015

Donald Earl Shumaker, 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at his home. A U. S. Marine veteran of World War II, he was an avid deer hunter and dedicated fan of the UK Wildcats. He was a retired boilermaker and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, neighbor, and friend.

Don was born on July 12, 1924 in Harrison County, Indiana, to the late Straud L. and Bessie A. (Richards) Shumaker. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie L. (Bruce) Shumaker; son-in-law, Steve Becht; and six siblings.

He is survived by his son, Lee Earl Shumaker (Ruth); daughter, Connie Becht; sisters, Wanda Lowe and Norma Merk; grandchildren, Kevin Becht (Kristi), Stacy Mayfield (Nick), Crystal Schindler (Jamie), and Steve Becht, Jr. (Lillie); and 7 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 2 to 8 PM on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). His Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Friday at the funeral home with burial and military honors to follow at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Hosparus – the Community Hospice of Southern Indiana (502 Hausfeldt Lane, New Albany, IN 47150).
