Donald T. Culver, 81, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, started his new journey on March 12, 2018, after a year-long battle with metastatic prostate cancer. His passing was peaceful at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital, on the anniversary of his father's birth.
Don was born and raised in Middletown, Kentucky. He attended Eastern High School and Transylvania University on a baseball scholarship. Don served 10 years in the United States Army Security Agency Intelligence Branch. He loved baseball and played in high school and college and in the Army. His favorite job was managing Holiday Retirement Senior Living communities. He loved UK Basketball and Football, corresponding with his Army buddies, and German beer and food. Don never met a stranger, and you always knew where he stood. He spent the last 5 years living at Azalea Hills Assisted Living where he "cruised" the halls in his electric wheelchair. Don loved visiting and especially aggravating the staff.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Catherine Culver; mother of his children and wife of 40 years, Marilyn M. Culver; and his infant son, Donald T. Culver, Jr.
Don is survived by his daughter, Sandy Long (Jason); son, Brad Culver; bonus children, Don Thomas (Brian Faeth), Ellen Weaver (Marvin), and Sylvia Garrett (Larry); grandchildren, Chase Durgan, Nathan Long, Charles Escue, Jr., Emily Haas (Drew), Jake and Tom Weaver, Sam McKinney, and Jack Bergant; sister, Lenada Merrick of Atlanta, Georgia; nephew, Jay Merrick; several cousins; and former wife, Lynne Manning.
Per Don's wishes there will be no funeral service. A Memorial Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2018, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, Indiana 47150).
Our family wishes to thank the staff of Azalea Hills Assisted Living, Hosparus – Community Hospice of Southern Indiana, and the many healthcare professionals for the loving, compassionate care they provided. The family would especially like to thank Dr. Brian Heimer who supported Don's final wishes of dignity.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hosparus – Community Hospice of Southern IN (502 Hausfeldt Lane, New Albany, Indiana 47150).
