Don Gilbert, a respected professional artist and dedicated teacher, passed away leaving behind a rich legacy of creativity and education. A native of Somerset, Kentucky, Don was the beloved son of the late Earl and Eunice Gilbert.
He served his county with honor and courage in the Army.
Throughout his life, Don was honored as a Kentucky Colonel, the highest honor awarded in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, reflecting his significant contributions to his community and state.
Don earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees from Eastern University and pursued additional graduate studies at the University of Louisville, where he attained Rank I status. He devoted 32 years to teaching high school art, followed by 13 years working with adults in general education after his retirement from Jefferson County Public Schools.
As an accomplished artist, Don actively participated in numerous art fairs throughout Kentucky and neighboring states. He received many awards for his painting and printmaking, particularly excelling in etching and engraving. His artwork, often inspired by his deep love of nature, found homes with private collectors and businesses alike. He was also recognized with many purchase awards over the years and took part in various juried shows, earning multiple honors.
Don was a valued member of both the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen and the Indiana Artists and Craftsmen Guild, communities through which he shared his passion for art and craft.
He was married for over 60 years to Jean McKinney Gilbert and was a proud father to two daughters, Dr. Tamela Gilbert and Donna Gilbert. Don cherished his family and was kept joyfully busy with their many activities over the years. He is also survived by five grandchildren.
Don was an active member of Valley View Church, where he found community and fellowship.
His life was a testimony to artistic dedication, educational commitment, and family love. Don Gilbert will be remembered with great respect and affection by all who knew him.
There will be a graveside service on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Richmond Cemetery, 606 East Main Street, Richmond, KY 40475 beginning at 1pm.
