Listen to Obituary

Donald Bruce Butterfield, fondly known as “Butter,” passed away on June 10, 2026, surrounded by his daughters and son-in-laws, leaving behind a legacy carved with love, passion, and unmatched craftsmanship. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, on February 9, 1935, Butter’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with dedication to his family, craft, and community.

A graduate of New Albany High School in 1953, Don served in the Air National Guard 123rd. Don’s journey was marked by his extraordinary talent as a Master Craftsman and woodworker. His hands brought to life exquisite furniture pieces for the Governor’s and Lieutenant Governor’s mansions, each creation reflecting his meticulous attention to detail and artistic soul. His carving at the pinnacle of the Jefferson County Government Center in Okolona stands as a testament to his skill, while the staircase he built at the US Marine Hospital in downtown Louisville and the display cases at the Patton Museum in Fort Knox showcase his deep commitment to preserving heritage through wood. Among his elite clientele was none other than the renowned movie producer Jerry Bruckheimer, for whom Butter crafted beautiful furniture for his Kentucky home, a mark of respect and admiration for Butter’s extraordinary workmanship.

Beyond his professional achievements, Don embodied warmth and generosity. He was an avid University of Kentucky fan, a passionate devotee of baseball, bowling, golf, fishing, and the great outdoors—activities that fueled his spirited nature. Those who knew him cherished his kindness, patience, and fervent creativity. More than anything, Don found joy in family gatherings and treasured the time spent with his dear Fulltone AC friends, relationships that spanned over 65 years, reflecting his loyalty and the true friendships that touched his heart.

Don’s proudest accomplishment was his profound love for his family, whose lives he enriched endlessly. He is survived by his loving daughters: Sherry Thomas, Tina Gibson (Terry), and Donna Carrico (Todd). His cherished grandchildren include Jeffry Thomas (Melody), A.J. Thomas, Matt Gibson (Catherine), Samantha Harvey (Chris), Jon Gibson, Sabrina Adams (Jim), Chelyn Lynch (Emily), and Brandyn Magers (Amber). He also delighted in his great-grandchildren: Cayde Harvey, Casey Harvey, Hadley Harvey, and Miles Gibson. Surrounding them are a host of nieces, nephews, other extended family members, and countless friends—all forever touched by his spirit.

Don was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Bertha Butterfield; father, Fred W. Butterfield; wife, Billie Butterfield; grandson, Derek Hart; great-granddaughter, Olivia Gibson; and siblings, Fred Michael Butterfield and Robert William Butterfield. They, along with all who loved him, hold memories that will continue to inspire.
