Desmond Wayne Saling

Saling, Desmond Wayne "Desi", passed away peacefully at the age of 73, on August 21, 2016, with his sister, Ruthie by his side. He began his final journey to be reunited with our parents, Desmond Wirth Saling and Elizabeth "Libby" Saling.

Desi, as we called him, was a very kind and gentle soul with a spark of mischievousness that continued well into his adult years.

He was musically and artistically inclined. Desi studied at WKU and The Cincinnati School of Art. During his later years, his art gave him an escape from his struggle and challenges from Parkinson's Disease. He continued making his paper art until he could no longer use his hands. It gave him pleasure to give his art mementos to many.

Desi enlisted into the US Army 7th Calvary Regiment, 3rd Squadron and was stationed in Germany. There he was asked to join The Garry Owen Bagpipe and Drum Band. He traveled throughout Europe with his group playing the bagpipes and experiencing the European lifestyle.

After being discharged, he returned home and began another chapter in his life. He was married and became a father of two. He also began his career with General Electric, from which he retired with many years of service.

Until we meet again, left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Ruthie Saling Maier (Tom), Donna Marie Saling; daughter, Robin Saling Straub (John Paul); son, Eric Wayne Saling; and six loving grandchildren.

In honor of Desi, a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 6 p.m. at the Nazareth Home (2000 Newburg Road, Louisville, KY 40205). There will be a reception to follow.

We would like to express our gratitude to all of the staff of Spaulding Square for making all of us feel at home and the outstanding care given to Desi. Thank you to Dr. Cornette for making Desi's final days more peaceful and comfortable.
