Derry Mitchell

Derry Mitchell, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on August 25, 2026, in Louisville at the age of 73. He was born on July 20, 1953, in Louisville, Kentucky, and spent a life marked by devotion to family, steady work, and a warm, easygoing spirit that brought laughter to those around him.

Derry graduated from Shawnee High School in 1971, where he played football and formed an early connection to the sports he would continue to enjoy throughout his life. He went on to build a strong work ethic through his career, serving as a supervisor at South Central Bell before retiring. He also worked at Wayne Supply before retiring. Those who knew him understood him to be dependable and caring, someone who took pride in his responsibilities and in the people he loved.

He was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend, and he was especially devoted as a caregiver for his mother. Derry was known as a good guy who liked to make people laugh. He enjoyed fishing, cheering on the Cleveland Browns, watching all sports, and keeping up with the news. He also played basketball in a league with the telephone company, carrying his love of sports from his school days into adulthood.

Derry’s memory will be cherished by his daughter, Domonique Ne'Chelle Mitchell; his son, Kris La'Mar Mitchell; his brother, William Hamblin (Debora Jones); his sister, Marcia McNair (Chuck); E'tonda Mitchell, his former wife and life-long friend; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and other extended family. He also leaves behind many who will remember his humor and his companionship.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jenaya De'Nay Hopper (Carlos Sr.) and by his parents, Mary Louise Hamblin and George Hamblin. Their memories remained an important part of his life and story.

Visitation will be held on September 5, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Louisville, 10304 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, KY 40272. A funeral service will follow there at 12:00 p.m.

Derry Mitchell will be remembered with love for his humor, his care for others, and the lasting place he held in the hearts of his family and friends.
