MAJ (Ret.) Dennis Sanford Marshall, 78 years old, of Louisville, Kentucky, died peacefully the morning of December 20, 2016. He was surrounded by those he loved most.
Dennis was born on November 13, 1938, in Vonore, Tennessee. He was the first child of James H. and Leah Marshall. In 1956, he married the love of his life, Agnes Louise Collins, and the two were happily married for over sixty years. With a work ethic matched by few, and a wife whose love always sustained him, Dennis joined the United States Army a year later, and was initially assigned to the 4th Armored Division in Nuremberg, Germany. Dennis later completed Officer Candidate School in 1966, graduating second in his class. In 1968, he deployed to Vietnam, and served as an advisor to the South Vietnamese Army. He would also deploy to Korea, and was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division from 1973 to 1974.
Dennis retired from the Army in 1977, having been awarded a Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge, among other honors. Before retirement, he would also attain his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and would go on to obtain his Master's in Education from the University of Louisville. Dennis later served as a JROTC instructor at Eastern High School and thereafter gained employment with the Department of Defense at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He served in this role for over twenty years. Virtually every day of his professional life was spent in service of country.
While he was certainly proud of his professional accomplishments, his dedication and love for his family took precedence over any military or other professional recognition he could ever receive—he was the happiest when in the company of those who loved him.
Dennis is preceded in death by his father, James H. Marshall and brother, Fredrick Marshall.
He is survived by his mother, Leah Marshall; his beloved wife, Agnes; three children, Dennis Marshall, Dr. Debra Marshall Gosser, and LTC (Ret.) Douglas Sanford Marshall. He is also survived by his grandchildren who adored him: Matthew W. Swafford, Esq. (Katie), Andrew Marshall Swafford, Brittany Statts (Tim), Caroline Gosser, Samantha Marshall and Taylor-Rae Marshall, as well as his daughter-in-law, Rebecca Marshall, and son-in-law, Clifton Gosser.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 23, 2016 from 9:00am until the time of the funeral ceremony at 11:00am at Newcomer Funeral Home East Louisville Chapel (235 Juneau Drive Louisville, KY 40243) with burial to follow at Cave Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be made to USA Cares or the Kentucky Humane Society.
