Listen to Obituary

Deborah Ann Cummings, 73, passed away on October 12, 2026. Born on September 21, 1953, Deborah lived a life marked by hard work, independence, faith, and a deep love for the people and places that brought her joy.

Deborah’s life was one of dedication and perseverance. She began her working years as an assembly line worker at Armor Pork Processing Plant. After college, she built a meaningful career as a respiratory therapist at the University of Louisville, serving in the ER and Trauma Unit Room 9, where she later retired. Her commitment to serving others continued into retirement, when she became a Red Coat Guest Services Representative at Churchill Downs, working in Millionaires Row and inside the Winner’s Circle during Oaks and the Kentucky Derby. She also worked seasonally as a mutual clerk operator for the Triple Crown at Churchill Downs, Pimlico Race Track, and Belmont Park. Through her continuous work at Churchill Downs, she became affectionately known as “Deb of the Downs,” a name that reflected both her dedication and the fond regard in which she was held.

She was proud of her education and earned an Associate’s degree in Respiratory Care from the University of Kentucky–Jefferson Community College. Deborah carried herself with strength and purpose. She was independent and nurturing, a Christian woman who attended West Chestnut Baptist Church, and someone whose presence brought both steadiness and warmth to those around her.

Outside of work, Deborah embraced the things that made life colorful and enjoyable. She loved to cook and loved being outdoors. She was an avid University of Louisville Cardinals fan and enjoyed attending Paint and Sip classes. Shopping, especially for furniture and clothes, brought her happiness, and she had a special fondness for shiny décor items that reflected her lively sense of style.

Above all, Deborah treasured her family. She is survived by her son, Nathan Cummings and his wife, Charmaine. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Jamaeyah, Jaiveon, and Jamilian, who were a cherished part of her life. Deborah is also survived by her brother, James Reynolds. May her family find comfort in the love she gave so freely and in the many memories that will continue to shine brightly in their hearts.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Reynolds; her father, James Reynolds; her sister, Sandra Reynolds-Johnson; and her brother, Kenneth Stratton.
