David John Rowan, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished member of his community, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, in Borden, Indiana. Born on October 3, 1929, in Fall River, Massachusetts, David’s early life began amidst the hardships of the Great Depression, and he faced considerable challenges, having not been raised by his biological parents. Despite these trials, David forged a rich and meaningful life marked by dedication, warmth, and an enduring spirit.
David’s journey of service and commitment commenced when he entered the United States Army on October 8, 1946, in Hampden, Massachusetts. Proudly serving during the closing chapter of World War II, he was drafted overseas where he faithfully fulfilled his duties. In recognition of his honorable service, David was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on July 5, 1949. His military service remains a testament to his courage and dedication to his country.
Following his time in the Army, David embarked on a distinguished career with the Ford Motor Company, dedicating 35 years to the company before his retirement. Retirement afforded him the opportunity to embrace a new passion: farming. He took great joy in cultivating the land in Starlight, Indiana, on the Schindlers' farmland, engaging with the rhythms of nature and the satisfaction of hard work.
David was a man who effortlessly lit up every room he entered. Known for his quick wit, warm smile, and openness, he was truly the funniest man in the room and never met a stranger. His love for fishing, family gatherings, cookouts, playing card games, horseshoes, and cornhole reflected his zest for life and his deep appreciation for simple joys. David was also a good dancer, delighting those around him with his lively spirit and charm.
Central to David’s life was his family, whom he regarded as his proudest accomplishment. Having not known his biological family, he devoted himself to creating the largest and most loving family he could imagine. He was an exemplary father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and unity. David is survived by his wife, Jane Elizabeth Rowan; his sons, David Rowan (Diane), John Rowan (Marilyn), and Daniel Rowan (Cathy); his daughters, Debbie Askren (Richard) and Diane Miller (David); as well as 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeff Rowan.
