David Andrew Overfelt, 80, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026. David was a loving and devoted husband, father, Papaw, brother and friend. He was a faithful Man of God and served the Lord through his dedicated service at church whether it be volunteering, coaching, gardening or driving the church bus. David was the ultimate girl dad. He was raised as the only boy in a house full of women which prepared him for his future role as a father of four girls. He often joked when asked how he survived their teenage years, he would reply "I worked nights", but the girls know he loved being around them. He always made a point to be there for all of the important times. A fond memory of David includes his annual tradition of setting up his portable grill in the back of his old green truck at the girls school to grill steaks for their birthday. He not only modeled what a good husband looks like, but he also demonstrated by taking his daughters out on their 16th birthday for their first date to show them how they should be treated. David enjoyed playing cards, hanging out with friends, fishing, attending theater performances, and listening to his eclectic collection of music, another tradition which he passed down to his daughters. Being a Papaw may have been his favorite role yet. Everyone knew he loved that baby stage-taking a nap with the babies was his special bonding time. Once he retired, he was able to be a more active participant in their care and started Papaw's Daycare; Full time caretaker for several grandkids as well as travel buddy for others once they moved away. He would fly out to Kansas just to make the eleven hour drive so Leslie wouldn't be by herself. He cheered on his daughters and grandchildren no matter the sport and anything else they decided to participate in. David proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and served as an MP in the K9 unit with his beloved dog, Yota. While stationed in Hawaii, he met and married his wife of 55 years. He retired from Ford after 30 years of service. His family is forever grateful to have such a loving and faithful husband, father, and Papaw. David will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
He was born on February 28, 1945 in Terre Haute, Indiana to Robert and Mildred (Moss) Overfelt. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Overfelt; and mother, Mildred Overfelt.
David is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Vickie Overfelt; daughters, Lori (Jason) Bobb, Sarah (Kurt) Barrett, Dava (Ryan) Helton, Leslie (Chris) Peterson; grandchildren, Lindsey (Tucker) Phelps; Katie and Ally Bobb; Ella and Andrew Barrett; Jaxson and Austin Helton; Addie, Jude, Ryland and Lincoln Peterson; sisters, LouAnn (Del) Good, Becky (Rod) Grieser, Jeanine Overfelt; as well as a host of extended family and friends to cherish his loving memory forever.
