Listen to Obituary
David Gilbert Applegate died peacefully on February 13, 2016 in Louisville, Kentucky at the age of 74.

David is survived by his children, Jane Weis (Kevin), John Applegate (Kim), and Rebecca Bailey (William), his five grandchildren, Christopher Bailey, Blake and Shelby Applegate, and Victoria and Mallorie Weis, all of Louisville, Kentucky. He is also survived by his sisters, Johnette Johnson (Billy Wayne), of Idabel, Oklahoma, Lois Williams (Edward) of Palos Verdes Estates, California, and his brother Gary Applegate (Marilyn) of San Diego, California. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sondra Lou (née Clayton) Applegate, and his parents, John and Norma (née Walker) Applegate.

David was born on September 3, 1941 in Kansas to John and Norma Applegate. He graduated from Valley Center High School of Augusta Kansas in 1959. He was the captain of the football team, and married Sandy, his high school sweetheart in 1960. In the years that followed, David held a number of interesting jobs. He managed fast food restaurants, ran a dog racetrack, and worked at a rail yard that handled a variety of dangerous chemicals. After moving to Louisville, Kentucky, in 1968, he began working for Phillip Morris as a shift manager, ultimately retiring from there after nearly twenty five years of employment. Over a period of three years, the couple welcomed three children into their home. His children and grandchildren remember him as a stoic man who anchored the family together, one who made everything look easy, while encouraging them to pursue their goals.

David was an accomplished golfer who in his later years worked at a local course, and often traveled with friends to play rounds all over the country. He was an excellent cook, who in his later years enjoyed writing poems to celebrate family holidays. A skilled handyman, David never shied away from taking on some new project around the house.

A celebration of David's life will include visitation from 10am - 2pm on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 235 Juneau Drive, in Middletown, with service to follow at 2pm.
