Butch graduated from Lynch High School in 1965, starring on the football team. The son of a coal miner, he volunteered for the United States Marine Corps at the age of 18. He was deployed to Vietnam in 1966 with 1st Battalion 9th Marines, which came to be known as "The Walking Dead." While on patrol, he stepped on an explosive device, losing both legs and an arm. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his sacrifice, and after a year of recovery at Philadelphia Naval Hospital returned home to Kentucky.
Despite this adversity, Butch never let it become an obstacle to working toward his dreams. A lover of learning, he went on to graduate from the University of Louisville, with a degree in Business Administration. He became the owner of B&S Printing in Louisville, and worked for the VA and DAV, helping other veterans receive the benefits they deserve. An avid sportsman, he was passionate about guns and riding his ATV through the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. He was a four-time participant in the National Veteran Wheelchair Games, where he won gold medals in Air Rifle and a silver medal in Swimming.
He was honored as the 1973 Louisville Disabled Veteran of the Year and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was recently honored by his beloved hometown of Lynch, KY in the Lynch Walk of Legends and the dedication of the Butch Cuzzart Bridge. Butch was a warrior, an American hero, and his determination and courage inspired all he encountered. He will be sorely missed.
