Daniel Arthur McAninch, 95, went to be with the Lord August 15, 2020 in Louisville, KY after a stroke.
Dan was born in Little Rock, AR on October 22, 1924. He was a fighter pilot instructor in the Army Air Corps during WW 2. He entered the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester in NY in 1946 where he met Betty Hanson, the love of his life. After graduating, they were married on August 7, 1948 in Johnstown, NY. Dan played oboe in the Rochester Philharmonic and earned his Master's Degree in 1949. He taught at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas from 1949-1955 and played in the Dallas Symphony. In 1956 he received the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Eastman School of Music. He taught at the University of Kentucky from 1956-1961 as well as playing in the Lexington Philharmonic and the Bach Society in Frankfort, KY. He taught at the State University of NY and played in the Erie Symphony from 1961-1963. Dan was principal oboe in the Louisville Orchestra from 1963- 1977 and principal oboe in the Louisville Bach Society until his retirement from the oboe in 1996. From 1963-1990, "Dr. Mac", as he was affectionately called, was the head of the music theory department and taught music theory, oboe, and piano technology at the University of Louisville, played for the opera , performed many ensemble & solo recitals and trained many fine piano technicians. While on sabbatical in 1968-1969, Dan played principle oboe in the Honolulu Symphony. Dan was a master piano technician and he and Betty toured piano factories & attended concerts in the US as well as Japan, Hawaii, Korea, China, Austria and Germany. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.
Daniel is preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Hazel McAninch; his wife of 67 years, Betty McAninch; son, Thomas Alan McAninch; brothers, Robert Luther McAninch and William Judson McAninch; grandson, Daniel Seth Gilley; nephew, Michael Alan McAninch; and niece, Mary Ann McAninch Bandy.
Daniel is survived by two children, Sue Causey (Steve), and Nancy Gilley (Rick); eight grandchildren, Michael Ensor (Robin), Rebekah Gilley Zhang (Winston), David Gilley (Lina), Leah Gilley Goggans (Joseph), Jonathan Gilley (Heather), Joseph Gilley (Haley), Benjamin Gilley (Hannah), and Joshua Gilley; one step grand-daughter, Rosalind Causey; eleven great grandchildren, James Ensor, Justin Ensor, Mariana Gilley, Daniel Gilley, Gracelynn Zhang, Everlee Zhang, Violet Goggans, Graham Gilley, Baylor Gilley, Roan Gilley, and Cole Gilley; 2 step grandchildren, Ella Harrington and Conner Harrington; nieces; Sarah Hanson (Gerry Cleary) and Diana Kash (John); and two nephews, Fred Hanson and Pat McAninch (Kathy).

A private memorial service will be held on Saturday October 10, 2020 at noon at Christ Church United Methodist Church. While friends cannot attend the service in person, all are invited to watch the live stream online at
