Craig Charles Garner, a computer network engineer, died unexpectedly but peacefully in his home in Louisville on June 28, 2017 at the age of 45.
Craig is survived by his parents, Joyce Garner (nee Craig) and Gordon R. Garner; his sister Angie Reed Garner; and brothers Scott William Garner and Will Michael Garner. He is predeceased by his grandparents, Mildred and William Craig; and Margaret and Gordon E. Garner.
Craig was born in Phoenix, Arizona on October 30, 1971. He graduated from Ballard High School, attended the University of Louisville and became a certified computer network engineer. Long before commercial website design services became commonplace, he developed a website structure that was robust enough to handle thousands of images yet simple enough for relatively unskilled users to maintain. He provided this structure to a number of clients. He was passionate about open source programming, digital privacy and freedom.
Craig lived in Lexington, Louisville, and Leadville, Colorado; he visited Australia, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands. His home was always shared with one or more rescue dogs and cats, particularly animals which were for whatever reason difficult to place.
He volunteered substantially with the Kentucky Waterways Alliance and the Center for Neighborhoods, using his computer skills to address the technological challenges common to developing nonprofits.
A memorial service will be held at Garner Narrative Gallery, 642 E. Market St. at 4 pm on
Monday, July 3, 2017.
Donations in his honor may be made to the Center for Neighborhoods, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and the Kentucky Waterways Alliance.
