Cornelia Rose Porter, a cherished soul whose life was marked by love, devotion, and a deep connection to family and community, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, in New Albany, Indiana. Born on March 3, 1930, in Starlight, Indiana, Cornelia's journey was one defined by compassion, faith, and unwavering integrity.
Cornelia attended Borden High School, laying the foundation for a life lived with purpose and kindness. Although she spent several years working as a bagger at the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant, her heart was never far from the children she cared for with boundless affection. Over the years, she became a beloved figure in Floyds Knobs, where hundreds of children came to know and love her as "Mema." Her nurturing spirit and joyful presence left an indelible mark on all who crossed her path.
A woman of many talents and passions, Cornelia delighted in spending time outdoors, tending to her yard and garden with a loving hand. She was an exceptional cook, filling her home and hearts with warmth and comfort through her meals. Her love extended beyond her kitchen and garden, embracing music as she played the spoons and guitar, bringing joy and laughter to gatherings. Family reunions held a special place in her heart, moments when her spirit shone brightest amid those she cherished most.
Cornelia was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She took immense pride in watching her family grow and thrive, a testament to the love and guidance she so generously gave. Her compassionate nature, honesty, and devout faith guided every step of her life, leaving a legacy of integrity and grace.
She is survived by her loving son, Don Banet; son Gerald Banet and his wife Donna; daughter Cheryl Banet and her husband Dan Ducharme; son Terry Banet and his wife Cindy; son David Banet; and her sister Jane Elizabeth Rowan. Her family circle continues to expand, blessed with 10 loving grandchildren, 25 adoring great-grandchildren, and 7 precious great-great-grandchildren who carry forward her warmth and kindness.
Cornelia was preceded in death by her devoted father, Clarence A. Schindler; mother, Frances E. Schindler; and her beloved daughter, Robin Banet-Seamon.
Her passing leaves a profound emptiness, yet the countless lives she touched brim with the love and memories she so generously shared. Cornelia Rose Porter’s life was a beautiful hymn of faith, family, and devotion—a legacy that will nurture the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her. She will be profoundly missed, forever remembered, and eternally cherished.
