Connie Jean Wood Skonicki

Connie Jean Wood Skonicki, 78, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, July 31, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky. She was born on March 22, 1948, in Louisville to Augusta Gray Isaac and John W. Isaac, Jr., and they preceded her in death.

On March 15, 1969, Connie married her high school sweetheart, Warren E. “Gene” Wood in Louisville. He preceded her, his “Baby Bud,” in death on April 2, 1986. 

They are survived by their two children, Jennifer Lynn Wood and Warren E. “Gene” Wood, Jr. Additional survivors include grandchildren, Donovan, Aunica, and Jamisen, sister Vicki Sells (Keith), brother Jack Isaac, III, niece Cindy Sells Nelson (Jason), best friend and sister-in-law Peggy Wood, and several additional nieces, nephews, friends, and family. 

Also preceding her in death was her second husband, Walter Skonicki — whom she married in 1998 — close friend and sister-in-law Suzanne Kiefer, and her beloved dogs Rex and Caesar. 

Connie graduated from Atherton High School, then spent her career working at GE and Target. She was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary Zachary Taylor Post 180. Connie was a devoted mother, spending much of her life raising two kids on her own and fiercely advocating for them every step of the way. She loved bringing home toys and treats working at Target for her grandkids who referred to her as “Grandma Woo” as well as Elijah and Olivia Nelson, who referred to her as “NeeNee”. She also maintained a special bond with her sister Vicki who helped Jennifer care for her as she aged. 

She loved spending time with her best friends, traveling to various places, taking cruises, bingo, and visiting casinos. She loved fishing and was a diehard Kentucky Basketball fan (Go Big Blue!) She enjoyed music from Neil Diamond, with her favorite song being Forever in Blue Jeans. Connie was passionate about what she believed in and about things that were important to her family. She had an acute stubbornness that was balanced by her quick-witted sense of humor. She loved to have fun and live large. 

A private service in honor of Connie will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the Kentucky Humane Society.
