Clarence Joseph Schaftlein, Sr., passed away on November 6, 2019. He was born on April 12, 1924 to the late Andrew and Emma (Graf) Schaftlein. Clarence was raised on a hog farm in Shively, Kentucky, where he was a member of St. Helen and St. Dennis Parish. In 1945 he married Pauline Dean, who preceded him in death in 2006. Together in 1949, they bought 40 acres in Floyds Knobs, Indiana, and became members of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church for 70 years. Clarence worked as a machinist for 30 years at Naval Ordnance in Louisville. After retirement he learned how to ski. This became his enthusiastic hobby, which he pursued until the winter of 2018 when he was two months shy of his 94th birthday.
He is survived by his children, Clarence Schaftlein Jr., Dean Schaftlein, Fr. Steven Schaftlein, Dolly Wallis, Melanie Casey; grandchildren, Rachel Schaftlein, Hannah Bezy, Eric Smith, Megan Beauchamp, Sean Casey; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). His funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church (5719 St. Mary's Road, Floyds Knobs) with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
