Barbara "Charlotte" Glass, 85, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
She was born on August 11, 1939 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Charles and Mae Belle (Stiltz) Hulsey. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, William "Bill" A. Glass, grandson, Andrew William Glass, and siblings, Robert Hulsey and Norma Hulsey Fair.
Charlotte grew up on 1st Street in Old Louisville, attending Engelhard Elementary, St. Louis Bertrand, and Ahrens Trade School. During a portion of World War II, she resided with her family in housing at the old Indiana Army Ammunition Plant, where both of her parents were employed. During the 1950s, she would stroll with friends through the shops on 4th Street and enjoyed walking with friends several blocks to Fontaine Ferry Park, saving a dime for her bus ride back. A 1957 Little Richard concert just before her 18th birthday in the old Armory was a highlight of her youth.
She enjoyed ballroom and square dancing, eventually having her first date with the love her fer life, Bill, at one of those square dances. Bill’s nephew, Bob Scherer, who was dating Charlotte’s roommate, had introduced the two. Charlotte and Bill happened to both be employed at LG&E when they met. Several dances and double dates later, the “comedy duo” were married at St. Mary Magdalene Church on May 11, 1963. The newlyweds moved to their lifelong home on the corner of Vogue and Manner Dale to start a family, with sons William arriving in 1966 and David in 1970. Charlotte loved her Hikes Point home, turning it into a lively hub of happiness for 56 years. As the kids grew, she returned to work as an administrative assistant and office manager for various companies, originally to ensure her children would be able to attend private schools. They were proud members of St. Martha parish. Charlotte and Bill savored their time with friends and family, whether they were boating with their fellow “river rats” on the Ohio River, attending their kids’ sporting events, or simply holding court with their neighbors on their back deck or in their dining room. Their homes away from home were successive Nauta-Line houseboats (“Sweet Caroline” & “Bobo”), moored at the “infamous” D Dock of Limestone Bay Yacht Club. What a party that was every weekend, from May to October!
Charlotte was a widow for 35 years, following the passing of her soul mate in 1990, but she lived those remaining years with an uncommon flare for life, meeting new friends and neighbors, and living out a well-known Will Rogers quote; a stranger was just a friend she hadn’t met yet. Evidencing her love for boating, Charlotte served on the board at Limestone Bay Yacht Club through the 1990s. After the turn of the millennium, Charlotte welcomed her two granddaughters (Alexa and Haley) and gleefully accepted her new role of “GG” with great energy and enthusiasm. She ingrained in these young girls a foundational wisdom of “Never let anyone break your spirit!” Charlotte was indeed the perfect mom and “GG”! She was selfless, supportive and legendarily fun-loving, finding happiness in the happiness of others. Charlotte had many talents she continued to hone throughout her life. She was an incredible cook and a skilled seamstress (including boat cushions and canvas covers, of course!)…and possessed a fruitful green thumb. She was an adored “dog mom” to her Mimi, Boss, Plato and Princie. She will be fondly remembered for her infectious smile, a keen sense of humor, a magnetic charisma, and her ability to light up a room. She never said no to a good party, even during her final chapter at Nazareth Home – Clifton, where her caretakers were captivated by her wit, spunk, and zest for life.
Charlotte is survived by her loving sons, William R. (Jennifer) Glass, David Brian (Outhay) Glass and two granddaughters, Alexa and Haley Glass.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the love and care provided by The Nazareth Home since 2021. Charlotte enjoyed many happy moments while in their care, continuing her habit of forging loving bonds with “strangers” through the end.
Per Charlotte's wishes, cremation was chosen. The family will host a celebration of her life at a later date.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Charlotte’s memory can be made to the Nazareth Homes Foundation (https://www.nazhome.org/give/) or the Kentucky Humane Society (https://www.kyhumane.org/donate/).
