Charles W. Vannis, known as "Chuck" to family and friends, passed away on April 8, 2026.
He was born on February 8, 1941, in Harrisburg, Illinois. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, demonstrating the same commitment and selflessness that would characterize his entire life.
Chuck was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, great-uncle, friend, and mentor to many. His 62-year marriage to his beloved wife, Meryl Vannis, was the cornerstone of his life, a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they built a family that continued to flourish through their children, Christopher Vannis (Lori) and Michelle Vannis-Corbett (Ron), and through the joy of their grandchildren, Justin Vannis (Taylor) and Morgan Stuthers (Kody), and their great-grandchildren, Tucker, Carson, and Harlow. He also held a special place in his heart for his nieces, Becky Reisert-Clark (Jeff), Kit, Kimber, and Ava.
Beyond his family, Chuck was a man of many interests and commitments. He was a proud member of the Romeo Club, where he enjoyed the camaraderie and fellowship of his companions. His involvement extended to the Georgetown Masonic Lodge #480. Additionally, his passion for fishing was well-known, and as a member of the Pillsbury Bass Club, he delighted in both the sport and the friendships it fostered.
Those who knew Chuck recall a man who was genuinely selfless, always ready to help anyone in need. His warmth and kindness made him a cherished mentor and friend. Chuck’s presence was one of steady support, laughter, and unwavering loyalty.
Chuck is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Irene Vannis, as well as his brother, Darrel, and sister, Peggy.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). He will be laid to rest privately at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park at a later date.
