Charles Don Turpin, 78, of Georgetown, Indiana, passed away on Monday, September 6, 2021. He was a United States Air Force veteran and also served 14 years in the 5010th Army Reserve Unit in Louisville where he was deployed during Desert Storm. Don had a 28-year career on the New Albany Fire Department, where he earned the rank of Captain and was instrumental in developing the Emergency Service System.
He had a lifelong passion for mentoring to others. After retirement, Don went on to become a school bus driver for the New Albany-Floyd County School Corporation. He was a member of VFW Post 1693, American Legion Post 28, and Northside Christian Church. Don had a love for fishing and hunting and especially enjoyed the many cross-country camping trips he was able to take with his wife.
He was born on April 5, 1943, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to the late Raymond Turpin and Lillie (Bolin) King. Don is survived by his wife of over 54 years, Donna (Mannix) Turpin, whom he met on Valentine's Day in 1967. In addition to his wife, Don is survived by his daughter, Deanna Ables (Toby); grandchildren, Clay and Tori Ables; and brother, Rex Turpin (Susan).
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 17, 2021, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) with his memorial service taking place at 1:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will follow at New Albany National Cemetery.
