Charles Wayne Powers aka "Grump" kissed all goodbye on the morning of Monday June 18th, 2018 at Baptist East Hospital. This poor man's Elvis was born to Leota and Charles Powers on November 10th, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. Charles was one of the good ole boys, able to effortlessly make friends and just as easily ticked those friends off 'cause he thought it was funny. After graduating from Southern High School and making the "All World" football team, he served as a Sgt. in the Air Force and worked harder than anyone to support his family. And it was some family.
Charles is survived by his children, daughter, Dawn Chmiel; son, Brice Powers; daughters, Charlsie Sharp (Phil), Meagan Hook, and Mandie Cowser (Jim); two brothers, Gene and Ted Powers; his best friend, and former wife, Sondra Powers; grandchildren, Raven, Riley, Guthrie, Zoe, Rider, Bo, Lola, Sophia, Stella, Charlie, Gabriel, and John Finn.
The nickname Grump comes from the name his grandchildren call him, and he was loved by all 12 of them. For them, it is like seeing one of your best friends go… because Grump never seemed like an old man who was somehow related to us, he was one of the kids. When he joked we laughed, when he talked we listened, and when he taught us lessons they stuck because they never seemed like lectures. This old Grump meant a lot to a lot of us… and he won't be forgotten.
His memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, June 21st at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals, and Receptions East Chapel (235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, KY 40243) from 4pm-6pm.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate if you would donate to the American Lung Association on Charles' behalf.
