Charles served honorably in the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955. His commitment to duty and service reflected the deep sense of responsibility that characterized his entire life. Following his military service, Charles embarked on a career with Piedmont Airline in 1956, where he worked as an Airline Agent. His tenure spanned several decades until his retirement in 1991. Together with his beloved wife, Jo, Charles shared a passion for travel. Their adventures included explorations across the United States, visits to five foreign countries, and journeys through the Providences of Canada—experiences that enriched their lives and created lasting memories.

In his leisure time, Charles enjoyed the intellectual challenge and calm pleasure brought by working crossword puzzles. He was also a devoted fan of black and white movies, particularly the Perry Mason series, finding comfort and intrigue in the classic storytelling. His appreciation for music was equally heartfelt; he loved listening to old country tunes and gospel melodies, sounds that resonated deeply with his soul.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Lelia Smith; brothers, Wade, Thomas and Bonnie Smith; sister, Annie Mae Fanning and great granddaughter, Tiffany Thornton.

Charles is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jo Smith; children, Joyce Hansen, Mary Stillwell, James Smith and Susan Martin; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; sister, Amelia Boykin; four legged companion, Molly and numerous nieces and nephews.
