Charles "Ed" Higgins, 81, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2021.
He was born on April 4, 1940 in Louisville, Kentucky to Clyde and Katherine (Clark) Higgins. He is preceded in death by his Father, William Clyde Higgins, Mother, Mary Katherine Wilson, Sister, Barbara Helm, and his Mother-in-law, Frances Perkins.
When Ed was just 17, he decided to follow in his father's footsteps and join the United States Marine Corps. With his mother's approval and signature he headed to Paris Island for boot camp. Three months after graduating he came back home and married Norma, his childhood sweetheart, who followed him around the world for the next 20 years. Early on he attended language school in CA and became a Russian linguist. He went on to serve two tours of duty in Vietnam and spent time stationed in Germany, Okinawa, Hawaii, NC, SC. In all Ed moved 30+ times in his years of service and his family moved 23 times. Cumulatively, he was away from his family for a little more than 10 of his 20 years. He honorably retired as a Gunnery Sergeant.
Ed loved the Lord and his family. He had many ranks and titles through the years but he was happiest to be called "Papa". He served as a member of Valley View Church for 18 years where he enjoyed ushering and greeting people.
Ed is survived by his loving Wife of 64 years, Norma Jean Higgins; Children, Bill (Mary Ellen) Higgins, Steve (Dorothy "Dottie") Higgins, and Sherry (Robert) Trego; 25 Grandchildren; Siblings, Jeri Allen and Reba Evarts as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends to cherish his loving memory forever.
Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southwest Louisville Chapel, (10304 Dixie Hwy). His Celebration of Life Service will be at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southwest Louisville Chapel.
