Listen to Obituary

Charles Thomas “Tom” Hedges, born October 25, 1935, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great‑grandfather, and community leader, Tom lived a life defined by hard work, generosity, and a genuine love for people.

Tom was a proud alum of Eastern High School and built a remarkable 33‑year career with Stewart Mechanical Enterprises, where he served as an HVAC Service Technician and later as Service Manager. His expertise and dedication extended beyond the workplace—he was an instructor for apprentices with the Pipefitters & Plumbers, shaping the next generation of tradespeople. Tom was a loyal and active member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 502, a brotherhood he cherished since joining in 1955.

A craftsman at heart, Tom always had a project underway. His workshop was his sanctuary, filled with an enormous collection of tools he knew how to use better than anyone. Designing the perfect jig for any task was his signature touch. If you wanted to see his face light up, all you had to do was talk about kids or dogs—two of his greatest joys.

Tom believed deeply in community involvement. He served as Vice-President of the Jeffersontown Chamber of Commerce and on its Board of Directors. He also led the Gaslight Festival as Chairman and served as Parade Chairman, roles he embraced with enthusiasm and pride. His commitment to young people extended to Jeffersontown High School, where he served as Band Parent President, supporting students with the same dedication he gave his own family.

Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phyllis Lynne (Shackelford) Hedges; his parents, Thomas Lewis Hedges and Bernadine Blanche (Ott) Hedges; his brother, Gerald Hedges; and his sister, JoAnn (Hedges) Carfield.

He is lovingly remembered by his children, Laura A. (Tom) Nunley, Kathryn L. (Bo) Wise, Sheila K. (Tony) Thompson and Thomas James Hedges. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Tina (Matt) Krull, Kati (Scott) Peterson, Mindy (Matt) Smith, Derek (Alisa) Wise, Heather (Josh) Hall, and Stephen (Helena) Thompson; and his great‑grandchildren, Jacob and Nick Peterson, Luke and Ava Krull, Dylan and Henry Smith, Colton, Makenzie, and Logan Hall; his sister, Mary (Herb) Ruby as well as many nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

Tom’s life was one of purpose, craftsmanship, service, and love. His steady presence, warm smile, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
