Charles Edward Flanary, Sr. was born on May 20, 1939 in Dryden, Virginia to his parents Sewell and Lonnie (Skaggs) Flanary. In a home shared with his mother, father, and 16 siblings, Charles,Sr. experienced the value of loving family relationships and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. After a few moves around the globe from Virginia, to California, to Kentucky, his family settled in Kentucky, where Charles was educated in the Jefferson County Public School System and later employed in the Construction industry. He retired from Louisville Paving Construction Company in 1999.
Having been a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, he was baptized there in 1971 by Rev. Ransom. He could be found serving there under the Christian leadership of his good friend and Pastor, Rev. Darrell Nathan until his health no longer permitted his attendance. In addition, Charles, Sr. was a dynamic vocalist and pioneering member of the Gospel Quartet Singing Group, The Singing Angels. It was not uncommon to find Charles, Sr. with a mic in hand, standing mainstage with his group, jubilantly praising and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ in song.
