Carl "Moe" Schindler, 91, of New Albany, passed away on Apr. 10, 2015. Born on Dec. 4, 1923, he was the son of the late Adam and Mary (Engle) Schindler. Always a man who loved people Moe worked the same dairy route for 38 years in association with Kannapel Dairy and then Oscar Ewing Dairy. He loved the people on his route and continued delivering milk products as long as door-to-door service was available. Later, he tended bar at the VFW Post 3281 and the Knights of Columbus. He is a lifetime member of the VFW Post 3281 and the Knights of Columbus and maintained memberships in the American Legion and the Men's Club at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He was a World War II veteran, Company C 735 Tank Battalion, who served as a gunner in a Sherman tank, nicknamed Cyclone by its members, in General Patton's 3rd army during the Battle of the Bulge and two other European campaigns. During his service he earned a purple heart with two oak clusters among other awards. Years later the French government awarded him the Knight of the Legion of Honor Medal for his U.S. military service in France during the war. It is awarded as the highest honor that France can bestow upon those who achieved remarkable deeds in France for the Liberation of France during WWII.
Moe is survived by his wife of 67 years Virginia "Ginnie" Schindler; four children and their spouses Terry (Brenda) Schindler, Sue (Pat) McCune, Carla (Kevin) Harrod, Pam (Brian) Hobbs. nine grandchildren -- Amy Schindler Moreland, James (Jill) McCune, Jennifer (Will) Detlefsen, Kristi (Scott) Nauman, Brent Schindler, Jaclyn Schindler, Randy Hobbs, Mike (Melissa) Hobbs, and Tom (Charissa) Hobbs – and eleven great-grandchildren called him grandpa. In addition, he was the sibling of Katherine Hadley, Mary Kasse, Louis Schindler, Joseph Schindler, and William Schindler who all preceded him in death. He is survived by many of his nieces and nephews and their families.
Visitation will be from 12 PM to 8 PM on Monday April 13, 2015 at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) with a rosary being prayed at 3 PM. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church (415 E. Eighth Street, New Albany) with burial and military honors to follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Rauch Incorporated or St. Mary's Catholic Church. During his time as a driver for Kannapel and Oscar Ewing, Moe felt a special bond with the children at Rauch Incorporated when he delivered their milk. He told many fond stories about the children who greeted him. The family would like to thank Lincoln Hills Health Center Hall G staff and Gentiva Hospice for their kindness and wonderful care during his convalescence.
