Bonita Sue Fabel, born on January 18, 1947, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, in New Albany, surrounded by her loving family. With a nurturing spirit and an unwavering dedication to her family, Bonita leaves a legacy that will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.
A graduate of Jeffersonville High School, Bonita embarked on a path marked by love and compassion. She devoted herself to being a loving mother, consistently making sure her children and family had all they required to flourish and achieve their goals, frequently caring for her family by looking after her grandchildren. Her warmth and kindness reached far beyond her close family, as she positively impacted the lives of those around her with her genuine nature and compassion.
Bonita was married for 60 beautiful years to her beloved husband, James Fabel, whom she became the caretaker of for numerous years before he preceded her in death. Their marriage was a testament to commitment, loyalty, and deep love, which Bonita carried with her as she embraced each moment, especially the time spent with her family. Together, they built a life filled with joy and laughter, celebrations and adventures.
As a devoted mother to her daughters, Tracy (John) Rhodes and Jamie (Todd) Dowell, Bonita took immense pride in watching her family grow and thrive. She cherished each of her grandchildren: Tyler (Markie) Rhodes, Katie Rhodes, Rhiley (Christian) Pavey, and Kobe Dowell, along with her great-grandsons, Jarad Rhodes, Jordy Rhodes, and soon to be Oakley Pavey. Every moment spent with them was a treasure, whether it was watching them chase their dreams or engaging in playful crafts—an activity Bonita particularly enjoyed.
Bonita frequently took her family to craft shows, where they would discover new ideas, and then she would attempt to recreate those finds, making heartfelt gifts and keepsakes for her dear ones. She was frequently seen relishing her beloved Facebook web series "The Shabby Tree". She had a special fondness for trips to the Great Smoky Mountains and Indian Rocks Beach, as well as evening walks with her neighbors, or going to the movies. Beyond these interests, Bonita loved the joy of watching her family travel through the lens of the ‘Find My Friends’ app, feeling connected to their adventures even from afar. Her heart was generous—she delighted in watching her family thrive.
Bonita is survived by her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandsons, along with her sisters Debbie (Alan) Foster and Joann (Kenny) Thomas. The love and bond shared among them now serve as a testament to her nurturing spirit.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, James Edward Fabel, her father, James Emery Cox, her mother, Olene Fern Cox, and her sister, Sandra Jean Cox. Bonita went to join her beloved James in heavenly rest, leaving behind a legacy of love and unity that will endure through her family.
