Listen to Obituary

Betty L. Riggins, a cherished member of her community and devoted mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026, in New Albany, Indiana. Born on December 24, 1927, in Nicholasville, Kentucky, Betty was proud of her rural upbringing on a dairy farm where she helped care for the animals, a formative experience that shaped her lifelong love of animals, especially dogs.

Betty’s educational journey began with her graduation from Henry Clay High School, followed by further studies at Madison College in Richmond, Kentucky. Her commitment to education continued throughout her life, culminating in a dedicated 20-year career as a kindergarten teacher and director at St. Marks Methodist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Prior to this, she generously devoted ten years of her life as a nanny for the John Smith family, providing nurturing care and support.

A woman of vibrant personality and faith, Betty was a proud member of the Red Hats and Floyds Knobs Christian Church, actively participating in the Disciples of Christ denomination. She loved attending church services and found joy in her role as a pastor's wife. Beyond her religious commitments, Betty enjoyed painting and had a sweet tooth that complemented her joyful spirit. She embraced the modern world with enthusiasm, delighting in making social media videos with her son, which brought laughter and connection across generations, and messin' with "The Mop". One of her most treasured family traditions was the annual vacation to Michigan, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Her greatest accomplishment, and the pride of her heart, was being a loving mother and grandmother. Betty is survived by her son, Kevin Proctor (Paula) Riggins; her daughter, Marcia (Brian Ferrell) Lambros; and her grandchildren-Lucy Riggins, Jesse Riggins, Justin Wheat, and Michael Wheat-as well as several beloved great-grandchildren who carry forward her legacy of love and kindness.

Betty was preceded lovingly by her husband, Proctor Riggins; her parents, Henry Farris and Mary Virginia Lewis; and her son, Mark Riggins, whose memories she held dear.
