Betty Jean (Skaggs) Newkirk, 78, peacefully transitioned home on December 30, 2017.
In her life she was accomplished in many things. Betty took pride in her life and work and had a can-do spirit. She was educated in Larue and Jefferson County. Betty earned many certificates in Early Childhood education, floral arrangements, cake decorating and catering; owned a restaurant, and opened and directed 18th Street Baptist Church Daycare; and also managed many other places. She loved children and she loved to travel.
She was a Christian and a member of 18th Street Baptist Church for many years, and became a member of Ashby Lane Baptist Church. Betty lived her life fully and she gave of herself to many people and changed the lives of everyone she knew.
Those who transitioned before her include her mother, Mildred Thompson; father, Howard Skaggs; step-father, Harrison Thompson; husband of 42 years, Thomas Newkirk; and various other family members and friends to welcome her home.
Betty is survived by her son, Terry Newkirk; two brothers, Jack (Sandy) Thompson and Alfred Thompson; and many other family members and friends who will miss her deeply on this side.
Visitation will be Friday, January 5, 2018, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, Southwest Louisville Chapel (10304 Dixie Highway, Louisville, KY) from 10am-1pm with a celebration of Betty's life beginning at 1pm.
Entombment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, 4623 Preston Hwy, Louisville, KY 40213.
A special thank you to all who were there for her and her son, Terry, before and as she made her transition, and afterward. Each and every one of you are very much appreciated.
