Bernie (as friends and family called him) was born on March 19, 1935 to Hugh Dee Griffis and Mary Broadus in the small town of Frankewing, Tennessee. After graduating from high school, he proudly joined the United States Navy where he served from 1952-1956, spending several years in Guam.
After returning from the Navy, he attended the University of Louisville, and graduated with a BS in Commerce in 1971. During college, he worked full time at BellSouth – where he continued his career for 38 years. He started at Bellsouth climbing the poles and ended up climbing the corporate ladder, finishing his career as Communications Liaison for several US Presidents (including President Ronald Reagan, whom he admired).

Bernie is a long time member of Westport Road Baptist Church. He has been involved in many Bible studies, committees, Saturday Biscuit and Gravy Group, and he worked as the check in person at the church's gym for many years. He loved sharing his faith with others.
He loved his TV shows: Hee Haw, Seinfeld, America's Funniest Home Videos, and anything on FOX NEWS.
Bernie will also be missed by his neighbors. He was seen daily riding his scooter …. Kroger, Starbucks and McDonalds were places he frequented the most.
Lastly, those who knew Bernie knew of his faith and his love for Jesus!
