Basil Lee Kimes, was born on October 5, 1929, and left this world peacefully on April 29, 2025.
Basil proudly served in the United States Army. His sense of duty extended beyond his military service; it was reflected in his participation in the Trinity United Methodist Church in New Albany, where he was a long-time member.
Outside of his service and faith, Basil was a man of many interests and hobbies. He enjoyed playing pool and was an avid fan of Indiana University sports. He spent many spirited afternoons cheering on his team, sharing his enthusiasm with family and friends alike. Gardening and yardwork brought him joy, as he found solace in nurturing his surroundings and enjoying the beauty of nature.
Basil's legacy lives on through his loving family. He is survived by his children, Linda (Robert) Von Kanel, James (Francesca) Kimes, and Sara Kimes, who will always carry his memory in their hearts. His life was further enriched by his ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, each of whom he cherished dearly. He will also be missed by his sister, Delores Potter.
Basil was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Jo Kimes, who was a significant part of his life and whose absence he felt deeply. He was also preceded by his parents, Emery Kimes and Alma Bernardi Kimes, as well as one brother and four sisters.
