Arlene B. Mrkacek, affectionately known to many as Winky or Toots, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 9, 1935, and passed away peacefully at her home in Louisville, Kentucky, on July 8, 2025. She was a beloved figure who touched the lives of those around her with her sweet and kind spirit, a non-judgmental nature, and an unwavering acceptance of everyone she met. Her family recalls that they never heard her speak an unkind word about anyone, a testament to her gentle heart.
Arlene's early career began in Chicago, where she worked for Westinghouse as the number 2 secretary, and later for Spiegel. It was during this time that she met her cherished husband, John, with whom she shared many wonderful years as a devoted wife and mother. After her children grew up, Arlene found fulfillment in her work as a caregiver in the Home Health industry in Louisville, demonstrating her profound empathy and dedication to the well-being of others.
A graduate of Gage Park High School in Chicago, Arlene's interests were varied and vibrant. She found joy in painting and took pleasure in watching the birds around her home. Her household pets, especially her trusted dog, Bunting, and her beloved cat, Wally, brought her great comfort and happiness throughout her life. Arlene was also an avid bowler, golfer, fisher, and swimmer, sharing many enjoyable moments with her late husband as well as being a member of the Middletown Senior Pinochle Group. Her love for music added another layer to her joyful existence. Arlene also stayed up to date with pop culture and all the stars! She also cherished time spent with "The Friskies", which was a group of fellow ladies from Middletown Christian Church.
Arlene is survived by her children, John, Donald, and Jim Mrkacek, Ann M. Salazar, Rose A. Izaguirre (John), and Katherine M. Mrkacek (Heather Mitchell). She is also remembered fondly by her grandchildren, Robert Salazar (Amanda) and Victoria Salazar, and her great-grandchildren, Robert Salazar, Jr. and Gabriel Salazar. Additionally, she is survived by her brother-in-law, Richard Mrkacek, and a host of nieces and nephews who carry her memory forward in their lives.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Ann Karnoscak, and her brothers, Kenneth and Dennis Karnoscak.
A visitation to honor her memory will take place on July 25, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, East Louisville, located at 235 Juneau Dr, Louisville, KY 40243. This will be followed by a funeral service on the same day, beginning at 7:00 PM. The graveside service will be held the following day, July 26, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Louisville Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home East, located at 11601 Ballardsville Rd, Louisville, KY 40241.
Arlene B. Mrkacek leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and love, which will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
